Banfield Group Wins Honor

A recent article written by a group of UC scientists (Rose Kantor as lead author), and overseen by ESD’s Jillian Banfield, was honored by the journal mBio as an “editor’s pick” for the journal’s October-November 2013 issue.

Nigel Quinn Wins Water-Environmental Award

Nigel Quinn received the Distinguished Life Membership Award from the California Water and Environmental Modeling Forum—which cited his many years of outstanding service and his work to establish the framework for model peer review.


ESD Scientists Win LDRD Awards

ESD was well represented among Fiscal Year 2014 Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) award winners, as announced this week (12/16/2013) by the Berkeley Lab Directorate.


Jansson Awarded Honor, Gives Lecture

Janet Jansson recently received an award for her work in soil biology, and presented the Francis E. Clark Distinguished Lectureship on Soil Biology, at a meeting of the Soil Science Society of America in Tampa, Florida.


ESD Site Environmentally Stellar

The Earth Sciences Division was recently awarded “LEED Platinum” status for its newly redesigned headquarters in Bld. 74—the first such award for any Berkeley Lab or DOE building within the Science Laboratory Infrastructure program.


Druhan Awarded at Swiss Conference

This past August, Jenny Druhan was awarded a prize for “best oral presentation” (out of 30 such presentations) at the EnvironMetal Isotopes (EMI) Conference in Ascona Switzerland. Her talk was based on her recently published paper in Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta.


ARPA-E Funds Jansson’s Fuel Work

ARPA-E awarded ESD’s Christer Jansson a $3.5 M grant to work on direct methane conversion, a process that, if successful, could lead to low-cost, energy-efficient fuel production from natural gas.
