Ben Gilbert New Fundamental Geosciences Program Lead
Source: Susan Hubbard
I am pleased to announce that effective immediately, Ben Gilbert will assume the position of Program Lead for ESD’s Fundamental Geosciences Program, an appointment that Ernie Majer has held since 1994. A new Division organizational chart is given here.
In this role, Ben is responsible for strategic development of Fundamental Geoscience opportunities in our Division. Ben will also work with Don DePaolo and Ernie Majer to advance the overall Fundamental Earth Sciences Program Area and with everyone in Division Council to advance the strategic evolution of the Division.
Research projects in ESD’s Fundamental Geosciences Program are primarily focused on developing new insights and approaches to investigate fundamental Earth processes, providing a foundation for effective and environmentally sound use of subsurface energy resources. Ben has an excellent background to lead this program for the Earth Sciences Division. Ben is a staff geological scientist who has been with LBNL since 2004. He is well recognized for his research in nanogeochemistry and time-resolved spectroscopy, and he currently leads the BES-funded geochemistry project in the Division, focused on quantifying the effect of salinity on geochemical processes occurring in confined aqueous fluids (such as clay interlayers).
I’d like to thank Ernie Majer for his outstanding leadership of the Fundamental Geosciences Program over the past many years, and to welcome Ben to this new position.
Sincerely,
Susan Hubbard
ESD Director
