Second Genome: Microbes Fighting Disease
Source: Gary Andersen and Dan Hawkes
ESD Ecology Department Lead Gary Andersen and former ESD scientist Todd DeSantis are mentioned in a recent (February 2015) Fast Company magazine article covering Second Genome, the South San Francisco biotechnology company focusing on the microbiome, hoping thereby to use gut bacteria to fight disease.
In addition to the information in the article, Andersen also notes that a press release this past week by Second Genome (see link below)) indicates that the company now has a drug in development for the treatment of Crohn's Disease that was developed by their microbiome discovery platform—one of the first clinical trials ever generated specifically from microbiome research.
