He knows it’s not an easy sell—and that the “yuck” factor is formidable—but ESD’s Ecology Department Head Gary Andersen and others are developing ways in which human waste compost can be turned into nutrient-rich fertilizer. By extracting DNA from the compost and analyzing it, scientists can be sure that the compost is pathogen-free—and reduce the water now used in flushing toilets and treating sewage.
