A team of researchers at the Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) led by Harry Beller (and including Steve Singer) of the LBNL Earth Sciences Division has engineered a common soil bacterium, Ralstonia eutropha, to produce high-performance diesel fuel from carbon dioxide rather than from the sugars in cellulosic biomass.

Jana Mueller was the lead author on a paper reporting that the bacterium Ralstonia eutropha has been engineered to produce diesel fuel from carbon dioxide. (Photo by Roy Kaltschmidt)
