San Onofre: A Year Off the Grid
Source: Robert J. Budnitz and Dan Hawkes
In an article from the January 27th San Diego
Union-Tribune, ESD’s Bob Budnitz discusses the safety problems behind
the recent outage of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station near San
Diego. The article addresses the debate over the power plant’s
indispensability—some observers believe the shutdown “represents an
opportunity to speed the transition to renewable power like wind and
solar,” whereas others note that (what is now) a year without nuclear
power “has translated into more pollution in Southern California skies
and higher utility bills, as natural gas plants fill in for San Onofre.”
