Amazon Forests and the Global Carbon Cycle

ChambersESD’s Jeffrey Chambers, in close cooperation with other researchers (including ESD’s Alan Di Vittorio) and  Brazil's National Institute for Amazon Research (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia [INPA]),  has devised an analytical method that combines satellite images, simulation modeling, and painstaking fieldwork to help researchers detect forest mortality patterns and trends. This new method will enhance understanding of the role of forests in carbon sequestration and the impact of climate change on such disturbances.

Their work (Chambers et al., 2013) has just been published in the most recent edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
